Oregon's summers are some of the driest in the country relative to its wet season — the Portland metro averages less than 1 inch of rain per month from June through September. For the fescue, ryegrass, and bluegrass lawns common in the Willamette Valley, staying green through summer requires a deliberate approach.
Understand What You're Working With
Most Oregon lawns are cool-season grasses — varieties that thrive in spring and fall but naturally want to slow down in summer heat. They won't look as lush in August as they do in May, and that's normal. The goal isn't perfect summer color — it's maintaining health and preventing permanent damage.
The Watering Schedule That Works
- Water 1 to 1.5 inches per week total during dry, hot weather
- Split into 2-3 sessions per week rather than daily light watering -- this trains deeper roots
- Always water in the early morning (before 8am) to minimize evaporation and fungal disease
- On extreme heat days (95°F+), a brief midday water can prevent immediate heat scorch
- Use a catch can or tuna can to measure how much your sprinklers are actually delivering
Mowing Rules for Summer
- Mow at 3.5-4 inches -- never lower in summer
- Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade in a single mow
- Keep blades sharp -- dull blades tear grass and increase disease and water loss
- Mow in the evening or morning, not during peak afternoon heat
- Leave clippings on the lawn -- they return moisture and nutrients to the soil
What to Avoid in Summer
- High-nitrogen fertilizer -- pushes leafy growth the plant can't sustain under heat stress
- Pesticide and herbicide applications during extreme heat -- can burn stressed grass
- Dethatching or aeration -- save these for when the lawn can recover
- Cutting too short before going on vacation -- a scalped lawn won't survive 2 weeks without water
The Dormancy Option
If you don't want to irrigate heavily, you can allow your lawn to go dormant — it will turn brown but will not die as long as you give it a deep watering every 3-4 weeks to keep the crown alive. It will green back up on its own when fall rains return in September. This is a legitimate strategy, not a failure.
