How to Winterize Your Oregon Yard Before the Rains Set In

Oregon winters are long, wet, and unforgiving on properties that aren't ready for them. The Willamette Valley averages 30 inches of rain between October and April, and most of it falls on ground that's already saturated. Here's what to do, and what happens if you wait.

Fix Drainage Problems Now, Not When It's Raining

This is the single most important winter prep task, and the one most homeowners put off until it's too late. If you noticed standing water, soggy turf, or runoff near your foundation last winter, this is the time to fix it:

- French drains: redirect groundwater away from low spots, foundations, and soggy lawn areas

- Surface grading: re-grade low spots that collect water so they drain naturally

- Dry creek beds: channel runoff through landscaped drainage features that handle heavy flow

Fall and Winter Cleanups Aren't Optional

Oregon properties generate debris all winter long, not just during the fall leaf drop. Storms bring down branches, wind scatters debris, and wet conditions keep everything messy. A single fall cleanup in November isn't enough to keep a property looking good through March.

That's why we offer recurring winter cleanup visits. Properties on a regular schedule stay presentable through the entire wet season—walkways blown clear, beds maintained, storm debris removed, and drainage paths kept open.

  • Storm debris removal: branches, limbs, and blow-down cleared after weather events

  • Leaf and debris management: ongoing through fall and winter, not just one cleanup

  • Bed maintenance: keeping beds clear prevents rot, disease, and pests

  • Walkway and driveway blowing: safety and curb appeal through the wet months

  • Drainage path clearing: keeping surface drains, swales, and French drain outlets free of debris

Yes, You Can Still Build in Winter: Fencing, Hardscape, and More

A common misconception is that landscape construction stops in winter. It doesn't, or at least it shouldn't have to. Many projects are actually better suited to the cooler, wetter months, and scheduling them in winter means you're not competing with the spring and summer rush.

  • Fencing — fence installation and repair happen year-round. Wet soil can actually make post digging easier, and winter is when storm-damaged fences need attention most

  • Retaining walls — block and boulder walls can be built through winter as long as the site isn't flooded. Getting a wall in before heavy rain prevents slope erosion

  • Drainage installation — French drains, dry creek beds, and surface drainage are often most urgent in winter, and can be installed between storms

  • Hauling and removal — storm debris, fallen trees, and overgrowth don't take the winter off, and neither do we

  • Grading and erosion control — if you have a slope that's washing out, winter is when you'll notice — and when it needs to be addressed
